Supporting Local Communities Through Sport: Recorra and Hitchin Belles FC

It’s hard to beat the smell of freshly cut grass, the thrill of scoring a goal, or the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a team. Across the UK, women’s and girls’ football is growing faster than ever, with grassroots clubs playing a vital role in helping players develop confidence, resilience, and lasting friendships.

That’s why Recorra is proud to sponsor Hitchin Belles FC, the largest all-female grassroots football club in England. This season, we’re giving the Belles ‘an assist’ to further their mission to foster an environment that stretches girls and women to achieve their full potential on and off the pitch.

Who are the Hitchin Belles?

Founded in the 1990s, when female football teams were far less prevalent than they are today, Hitchin Belles FC has grown into the largest all-female grassroots football club in the country. Today, the club supports more than 620 players across 48 teams.

The club is committed to helping girls and women challenge themselves, build confidence, and realise their full potential. Just as importantly, the club works hard to create an environment where every player feels supported throughout their football journey. Coaches and club leaders are thoughtful about how they behave around players and how they respond to adversity, using football as a way to instil positive values.

The club has a dedicated wellbeing team and welfare staff who support players with everything from confidence and mental wellbeing to physical and emotional changes. Female representation throughout the club helps drive conversations and initiatives that directly affect girls and young women, ensuring their needs remain at the heart of decision-making.

This includes making sure players have access to appropriate kit as they progress through puberty and begin menstruation. By creating an open and supportive environment around these topics, the club helps remove barriers that can affect confidence and participation in sport.

Why does Recorra sponsor Hitchin Belles FC?

By backing a grassroots club that champions inclusion, confidence, and personal development, Recorra aims to help make a difference to local young women. We are proud to support a local club that is creating a positive environment where young women can learn and grow.

How has Recorra’s sponsorship helped Hitchin Belles FC

This year, Recorra’s contribution will go towards additional kit sizes so the Belles can better accommodate girls across a wide range of ages and body types. This support helps the club continue to welcome players as they grow, ensuring cost and kit availability don’t become barriers to participation for players.

For me and my daughter, some of the biggest influences in our lives are around sport, including our time with the Belles. We’ve made memories that will last forever.

What are the challenges facing grassroots youth football?

Despite the growth of women’s and girls’ football, grassroots clubs continue to face significant challenges. As demand increases, clubs need greater investment in facilities, equipment and resources to keep pace. Even successful clubs like the Hitchin Belles rely heavily on volunteers to coach teams and support day-to-day operations.

Sponsorship plays a vital role in helping clubs fund essential costs, including kits, training equipment, referee fees, pitch hire, grounds maintenance, and health and safety provisions.

What’s next in the hitchin belles’ journey?

Hitchin Belles FC has ambitious plans for the future as they continue to raise standards on and off the pitch.

With additional funding, the Belles plan to expand wellbeing initiatives, including awareness days focused on ADHD and autism. Both conditions often go underdiagnosed in girls and young women because of differences in how symptoms present in females compared to males. To further their goal of providing young women with an inclusive, healthy environment, the Belles would like to provide resources that help players and families better understand neurodivergence.
