Carbon Catch-up with Kirsten Zoe Smith

After spending the winter meticulously calculating Recorra’s carbon data and publishing our carbon footprint report, our Net Zero Strategist Kirsten is back on the conference circuit looking at Lifecycle Carbon Assessments (LCAs).

LCAs are incredibly useful for assessing the most sustainable ways to recycle, as they not only look at processing materials, but also transport methods and distances, and assess value for money. She is currently exploring ways to navigate around the expensive software and gatekeeping consultants to access the skills and data necessary for LCAs.

Attending the edie conference, Kirsten engaged in some excellent discussions about reuse and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) and learnt a lot about solar and battery systems from the trade stalls. She’s hoping what she learnt can point her in the right direction for finding a decarbonisation solution for Recorra’s energy needs.

UK Green Business Awards recognise the Baker Street Quarter Partnership

Baker Street Quarter Partnership was shortlisted in the 2025 UK Green Business Awards in recognition of their Smarter Recycling project. This area-wide waste and recycling collection service supports businesses in boosting their recycling rates whilst also reducing the number of waste collection vehicles to improve air quality and reduce congestion.

Recorra has been a part of this project since 2014 and is a great example of what is achievable when people come together to drive real environmental impact.

Sunny Beach Cleans are Back

In other news, with the long-awaited arrival of spring, our beach cleans are back. Led by Ty Lawrence-Lamarca and Ben Pratt, Recorra’s Brighton Team and Pelham Housecollected a whooping 12.21kg of waste from Brighton’s shoreline. This is the equivalent of a 240 litre bin!

It is both and impressive and worrying amount of waste and Recorra is very much looking forward to the day these beach cleans are no longer necessary.

Spreading the Word!

Also this month, our Head of Marketing and Content, Sioned Thomas (MCIWM) joined forces with of Plan Zheroes – The Zero Food Waste Heroes to speak at letsrecycle.com’s National Food Waste Conference 2025.

Their talk outlined how Recorra and Plan Zheroes collaborate to help organisations like the local supermarket redistribute their surplus food. They covered key statistics around business food waste and the challenging realities of redistributing food, but also the success stories they have witnessed over the past year.

We also began the month with the Social Mobility Business Partnership presented by our Head of Client Engagement, Matthew McVeigh, at Broadgate.

Matthew led students from Stepney All Saints School and Mulberry Academy Shoreditch in an interactive session on the importance of recycling practices, career opportunities in sustainability within the waste management sector, and how to effectively engage an audience.

We’re looking forward to getting involved with more career days at Broadgate.
