Recorra's July Roundup

Welcome to the July edition of Recorra’s Monthly LinkedIn Roundup, where we help you stay up to date on our latest developments, including the highlights of our annual Zoo Event, our robotic sorting arm, our latest net zero milestones, and more.

Celebrating 35 Years of Recorra

Thank you to all of our staff, clients, and partners who made Recorra the company it is today. In June, we celebrated at our annual London Zoo Event.

In addition to our usual lineup of informational stalls and delicious food and drink, we hosted a series of educational talks in the all-new Recorra Arena space:

Special thanks to our event partners: Cheeky Panda | Certified B Corp, VOW Wholesale, and Vegware, who helped make the event a success.

Major Milestones on the Road to Net Zero

This London Climate Action Week, we were proud to share some of our key emissions milestones on our journey to net zero:

  • An estimated 1,070 tonnes of CO2e will be saved from our switch to HVO in 2025 – the same as flying 2,670 times from London to New York.
  • 100% of our electricity is sourced from green energy and verified by REGO certificates.
  • Our all-new electric RoRo from Scania Group is expected to save 50 tonnes of CO2 in one year. That’s the same as an entire year’s emissions for 11 average UK residents.

Ultimately, we plan to halve our direct emissions (from our 2019 baseline) by 2030, achieve net zero direct emissions by 2040, and achieve total net zero by 2050. Though we’ve come a long way already, we continue to call on our suppliers, partners, and clients to work together to face this challenge as a team.

World Oceans Day Spotlight: Targeting Microplastics

In honour of World Oceans Day, we took time to recognise the microplastics crisis. Did you know:

  • 430 million tonnes of plastic is produced each year
  • Two-thirds of this plastic becomes waste after a single use
  • 11 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean annually

With Recorra, businesses have a chance to be part of the solution. In addition to recycling your business’ typical plastic waste, we can also recycle hard-to-recycle plastics like wrappers and even coffee cup lids. Our Circular Box turns these plastics into STORMBOARD, a durable plywood alternative used for applications such as furniture, hoarding, and even Christmas trees! Through innovation and collaboration, we help keep plastics out of our oceans.

Learn more about the microplastics problem and how we are addressing it here.

Celebrating Pride, Every Day of the Year

At Recorra, sustainability goes beyond managing resources; it’s about building a workplace where everyone feels respected, included, and free to be themselves. We’re committed to celebrating and standing with the LGBTQ+ community every day.

Hear perspectives on Pride from several of our key team members here.

The Hidden Heroics of Peatlands: How You Can Help

On World Peatlands Day, we recognised the important role peatlands play in regulating the global climate. These waterlogged, carbon-rich wetlands store over 30% of global soil carbon. That’s more than all the world’s forests combined!

How your business manages its waste can directly impact these valuable natural resources. The organic material formed in peatlands (peat) is often extracted for use as a soil improver in agriculture and gardening. Removing peat from the ground destroys peatlands, releases stored carbon, and contributes to climate change.

Small changes, like using compostables and composting your green waste, can help create nutrient-rich compost and reduce our reliance on peat-based products.

Sowing Seeds of Change

Our friends at Julius Rutherfoord & Co planted the seed wristbands and flowerbombs we gifted at our Zoo Event last year. Now, they are enjoying a garden made out of their old Henry Hoovers! We feel lucky to work with clients who approach their sustainability goals with such creativity and spark.

The Results are in: Waste World Cup

Our reigning letsrecycle.com Waste World Cup winners had a tough game in the final this year, conceding 2-1 in the final match. Despite the loss, it was a great day and wonderful to connect with friends across the waste industry.
