The Eco Youth Club at Umthombo Trust – our new charity partnership
Discover Recorra's inspiring new partnership with the Umthombo Trust in rural South Africa, supporting youth empowerment.
In this piece, I’ll share my experiences with Umthombo Trust, an impactful charity in rural South Africa. Recorra is excited to announce our partnership, and the exciting initiatives we have planned to empower local youth.
A key aspect of my role with Recorra has been to identify a charity partner making a meaningful impact in South Africa. For Alison, Bill and Mark, the authenticity of purpose and the organisation’s transparency in management were paramount. Fortuitously, my home in rural Knysna is located near the Umthombo Trust, which features a learning space and community garden allotments.
Before my contract with Recorra began, I attended a weekly Muay Thai martial arts class at Umthombo’s learning space. Youngsters from the under-resourced community of Rheenendal participate for free, while a few working adults, including myself, paid for classes, helping to subsidize coach Abidah’s fees. The class is of high quality, and the unique blend of ages, races and economic backgrounds creates a special atmosphere, one that is unfortunately uncommon in a still-segregated South African society.
This experience deepened my understanding of Umthombo’s authenticity and community-centred approach. Their vegetable growing allotments, with verdant rows of spinach, spring onions, root vegetables, and more, further emphasised this commitment. This established project not only provides fresh, organic food for the community but also generates a surplus for sale to families like mine. It’s presence over four years and multiple growing cycles signals the project’s longevity and sustainability.
When we approached Umthombo about a potential partnership, our proposal was met with gratitude, but it also sparked considerable discussion to ensure our motivations were aligned. The authenticity of the charity and the dedication of Layla Staegmann were evident throughout these conversations. Unlike some charity partners who may accept partnerships without thorough vetting, Umthombo sought to ensure the right fit.
Recorra’s contribution of £5,000 to the Umthombo Trust has been earmarked for supporting its Eco Youth Circle (EYC) program in Rheenendal. This initiative fosters a 10-month learning process driven by youth input and community collaboration, addressing the needs of participants who have grown up in an exceptionally challenged and resource-limited area.
Created by Cultural Connections NPO, the EYC program emphasises trauma-informed principles to create a safe and supportive environment. It incorporates experiential art, movement and roleplay to facilitate creative learning and life skills. Engaging with nature enhances mental well-being and fosters deeper connections to the environment.
I’m so looking forward to joining the EYC as a guest facilitator for three weekly sessions and assisting with recycling and circular economy education . To support this we’re planning an outing for the youth to visit the local recycling company and a beach or area of natural beauty. Hopefully a treat for the youth who’s opportunities for travel can be limited. My interactions will most definitely provide learning and growth for me personally.
Hear next time from me on how it’s all going.
