Discovering the Umthombo Trust
A key aspect of my role with Recorra has been to identify a charity partner making a meaningful impact in South Africa. For Alison, Bill and Mark, the authenticity of purpose and the organisation’s transparency in management were paramount. Fortuitously, my home in rural Knysna is located near the Umthombo Trust, which features a learning space and community garden allotments.
Before my contract with Recorra began, I attended a weekly Muay Thai martial arts class at Umthombo’s learning space. Youngsters from the under-resourced community of Rheenendal participate for free, while a few working adults, including myself, paid for classes, helping to subsidize coach Abidah’s fees. The class is of high quality, and the unique blend of ages, races and economic backgrounds creates a special atmosphere, one that is unfortunately uncommon in a still-segregated South African society.
This experience deepened my understanding of Umthombo’s authenticity and community-centred approach. Their vegetable growing allotments, with verdant rows of spinach, spring onions, root vegetables, and more, further emphasised this commitment. This established project not only provides fresh, organic food for the community but also generates a surplus for sale to families like mine. It’s presence over four years and multiple growing cycles signals the project’s longevity and sustainability.
