A world without bees

For a while now Friends of the Earth have been campaigning to save our bees. Bumble bees aren’t doing so well at the moment and they’ve called on the Government to draw up a Bee Action Plan. They are proposing:
- Every park to include some habitat for pollinators
- Dedicated habitat for bees on all farms
- Helping farmers to produce and protect crops using fewer pesticides
A part of their campaign has even involved sending out wildflower seeds so you can create your own bee habitats. (Click here for information on how to get yours) So why are they declining? The primary reasons are pesticides on farms, urbanisation and climate change. But lots of people are questioning why bees are so important. Wholefoods released images last year that hold a part of the answer. They show choices of foods with bees and choices without.
With Chelsea Flower Show currently in full swing, why not get your green fingers out and get involved by getting yourself some wildflower seeds?
Finally, If you see a bee on the ground that isn’t moving, it’s not necessarily dead, it’s probably just tired from carrying lots of pollen and needs re-energizing. So if you mix a tiny bit of water with some sugar and let it drink it from a spoon it will give it the boost it needs to continue on its way.
