Our Client's Challenge
Paper towels are one of the most common items in workplace washrooms, but they traditionally end up in general waste due to their short fibres and wet-strength agents. This increases disposal costs and carbon impact. Moorplace wanted a solution that would reduce waste, improve recycling rates, and support ESG goals.
Our Solution
Recorra implemented a dedicated Paper Towel Recycling stream using our Recycling Hub and colour-coded collection sacks. With Recorra’s Recycling Hub, the single-drop front bin can store multiple waste streams, so no extra space is needed. Our colour-coded sacks keep materials separate, allowing Moorplace to capture a clean fibre stream without adding complexity to their existing waste system.
Achievements
In just three months, the results were clear:
- Paper towels collected: 906 kg
- Percentage of waste collected: 8%
- Recycling rate: jumped from 74% to 85%
Compared to producing new paper towels, this process saved:
- 290 bathtubs of water
- Enough energy to power a home for over five months
- 15 trees
Why It Matters
Adding a dedicated Paper Towel Recycling service can cut general waste by up to 20%, reduce costs, and deliver measurable environmental benefits:
- Up to 40% lower CO₂ emissions compared to other disposal methods
- Saves 26,000 litres of water per tonne of paper towels recycled
- Preserves 17 trees per tonne of paper towels recycled
