The Westin London City Hotel Invests in Innovation

Combining innovation with sustainability, The Westin London City implemented SelfWeigh technology to gain greater visibility over waste production, improve operational efficiency, and support the high standards expected of a modern luxury hotel.

About the client

Business and leisure meet seamlessly at The Westin London City, a contemporary luxury hotel nestled along the River Thames.

Just moments from the City of London, the hotel combines sophisticated design, wellness-focused experiences, and modern comfort to create a refined retreat for both business and leisure travellers.

Our Client’s Challenge

A forward-thinking property like The Westin requires an equally efficient operational infrastructure behind the scenes. However, the hotel team faced ongoing challenges in accessing accurate waste data, as vehicle weight restrictions on surrounding access roads prevented heavier, technology-enabled collection vehicles from entering the site.

This meant waste reporting relied on manually measured samples and average estimations, limiting the level of detail available to the hotel. At the same time, the restaurant team was looking for clearer insight into food waste production to help reduce waste levels and support smarter procurement decisions.

Our Approach

To address the issue, Recorra’s Account Management team worked alongside its Innovation Team to identify a practical and cost-effective solution. After reviewing several options — including on-site weighing scales and alternative technology providers — the team introduced SelfWeigh bins: RFID-secured, self-weighing containers capable of automatically uploading live weight data through a connected mobile app.

The Results

Following a successful site assessment, The Westin London City invested in the innovative technology. The results were immediate. Accurate weighing data for every waste deposit provided the hotel with far greater visibility across operations, helping teams better understand waste production and identify opportunities for improvement.

The implementation also delivered wider operational benefits. A tidier, more manageable loading bay reduced the need for manual handling, improved vehicle movement, and minimised delivery delays — creating a smoother and more efficient system overall. By implementing SelfWeigh technology, The Westin London City has been able to combine operational efficiency with a smarter, more data-driven approach to sustainability, supporting the high standards expected of a modern luxury hotel.
