How Does Collection Work?

01

Place an order for a bin or roll(s) of sacks based on your business’s needs by contacting our Helpdesk.

02

Work with our Helpdesk to set up a collection schedule that suits your needs.

03

If you are using bins, choose from two service options:

  1. Exchange: We exchange your used bin for a clean one upon collection.
  2. Empty: We empty your bin on-site for you to use again.
04

Once the bin or sack(s) is delivered, set it up in a convenient location, e.g., your bin store room or loading bay.

05

Inform your staff of the location and proper use of your new receptacles. You can download and print signage from the ‘Resources’ section of the MyRecorra portal to help your staff sort glass recycling properly.

06

Ensure no plastic sacks are included in your glass recycling. These are classified as contamination.

07

Recorra’s Operatives will collect your recycling as agreed.

08

We will tip your glass directly at our recycling partner to be recycled into new glass products.

What Collection Type Is Right for You?

Ideal for medium to large businesses with storage space like a waste storage area or loading bay, wheeled bins are collected on a rota that suits your needs. Our Helpdesk will help you select a bin size and collection schedule that works for you, and our Operatives will arrive as agreed to collect your food waste by tipping it into our refuse collection vehicles.

What Happens After We Collect?

Disposal location: URM UK Ltd Port of Tilbury, Tilbury Freeport, Tilbury, Essex, RM18 7EH

Recorra delivers mixed glass to URM UK, whose processing plant is located so close to our facility that we tip the material directly from our vehicles, minimising costs and greenhouse gas emissions from transport.

Here, bottles are crushed into a cullet and sorted to remove contaminants such as bottle caps and paper. It is then scanned to detect the various colour and shades of glass. The glass is separated into three main colours: clear, brown, and green. It is then supplied to manufacturers who make new bottles and jars from the finished, high-quality cullet.

Simpler Recycling Legislation

Under the Simpler Recycling legislation, all businesses with more than 10 employees in the UK must have separate glass recycling collections. As of 2027, mandatory glass recycling will expand to include all businesses regardless of size.

How Does This Support Sustainability Goals?

Glass is infinitely recyclable, meaning it can be reused endlessly without losing quality – the perfect circular economy material.

At Recorra, we understand the importance of glass recycling. The process of producing virgin glass is ‘energy and resource expensive’, with its global carbon footprint in 2022 estimated at 95 million metric tonnes, the same amount of carbon emitted from powering over 12.7 million homes in a single year.

Did you know:

  • Per tonne of glass recycled, the equivalent of a flight from the UK to New York – around 580-590kg of CO2 – is saved from entering the atmosphere.
  •  Recycling just one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 100-watt light bulb for four hours
  • Glass produced from recycled glass reduces related air pollution by up to 20% and related water pollution by up to 50%

Why Can’t I Put Sacks in Glass Bins?

For customers using wheeled bins, it’s essential plastic sacks are not put into bins as this contaminates the glass collections. As we tip glass directly with our glass recycling partner, it cannot be contaminated with any other material, including plastic sacks. Our glass is recycled back into glass bottles rather than being crushed for aggregate, so it needs to be free of contaminants. It is dangerous for our staff to pick sacks from glass collections due to the risk of injury from sharp shards.

Practical steps can be taken to avoid the need for sacks. If space is restricted, you can use small containers that don’t require lining, like slim bins or glass crates. These are designed for tight spaces and can be safely transferred into a 240L wheeled bin without need for using sacks. If space is not an issue, you can hire additional bins to ensure staff put glass straight into the bin for collection rather than using sacks.

FAQs

  • Glass can easily break during the collection and sorting process. If glass shards go through our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), they can damage equipment and become a health and safety risk to our staff. We also tip collected glass directly with our recycling partner to be turned into new glass bottles, which we can only do with a clean, segregated glass stream.

  • Glass bottles and jars should be emptied of liquids. Labels, caps, and lids can remain. Glass with food residue is not acceptable. Sacks should not be included in glass recycling.

  • Glass bottles and jars of any colour can be collected. Pyrex, ceramics, and crystal glass are not accepted because they are made from different types of glass with different chemical compositions and melting points compared to container glass. They require different processing and contaminate the recycling stream.

  • We offer small-volume collections such as glass crates, which can be collected as and when required. You can also hire a bin and arrange a collection once full.

  • Due to health and safety concerns, please avoid placing broken glass in this recycling stream. Please safely wrap any broken glass in paper towel and place it in your general waste bin.
