Zero to landfill means that none of the waste collected is sent to landfill sites. Instead, it is diverted to processes such as recycling, composting, or energy recovery, ensuring it is reused, repurposed, or converted into something useful.
At Recorra, general waste is sent to energy from waste facilities, where it is incinerated in a controlled environment to generate electricity or heat. This reduces environmental impact and avoids landfill emissions.
You should not put food waste into general waste. Small food scraps are accepted within general waste, but it is better to dispose of them through a food waste collection service.
From March 2025, food waste collections became mandatory for businesses with more than 10 employees under the new Simpler Recycling Legislation. Recorra offers tailored collections for both general waste and food waste, making your business waste management simple, flexible, and compliant.
No, you cannot put anything in your general waste collection. While general waste covers non-recyclable and non-hazardous items, certain materials, such as food, electricals, hazardous waste, and batteries, must be separated into the right waste stream. This ensures compliance with legislations and supports responsible business waste management. If you’re unsure about a specific item, it’s best to check with our team or refer to your waste stream guide.
General waste refers to materials that cannot be recycled, composted, or classified as hazardous. This typically includes everyday items such as non-recyclable packaging, contaminated food containers, and disposable products like tissues and wipes. These materials are collected separately from recycling and hazardous waste streams.
Recorra operates a zero to landfill policy, meaning your general waste collection is never sent to landfill and is instead sent to an energy recovery facility where it is converted into electricity or heat. This helps reduce landfill use in the UK and supports more sustainable business waste management. While general waste is often unavoidable, we encourage customers to minimise it by recycling correctly through other waste streams, such as Mixed Recycling, Food, and Cardboard. We also recommend choosing reusable or recyclable alternatives wherever possible.
