  • If your business has 10 or more full-time equivalent employees across all sites combined, you must comply with Simpler Recycling at every site, even if individual locations have fewer than 10 employees.

  • Simpler Recycling aims to boost recycling rates, reduce landfill, lower carbon emissions, and support the UK’s circular economy by ensuring more materials are recovered and reused.

  • Yes, the rules apply to all non-domestic premises, including schools, hospitals, care homes, and charities, according to the same employee thresholds as businesses.

  • Contamination occurs when non-recyclable items or the wrong types of waste are placed in recycling bins, or when recyclable materials are not clean and dry.

  • Most businesses typically require just three or four to comply with the Simpler Recycling legislation. This usually includes one dry mixed recycling bin for paper, glass, metals, and plastics, and one bin for paper and cardboard (unless your waste management partner has assessed and approved collecting these materials together with mixed recycling.)

  • Dry-mixed recycling can be paper & cardboard, plastic, and metal. 

  • Simpler Recycling ensures that general waste is collected every two weeks alongside the weekly food waste and recycling collections. 

  • As of January 2025, parliament is still discussing the consequences of non-compliance, but financial penalties are likely. 

  • The goal of the reforms is to eliminate confusion over recyclables and ensure standardise recycling practices across England. It is also being introduced to cut down on waste crime.
