Coffee Grounds Recycling Powers Circular Change at The Flour Pot

The Flour Pot Bakery is leading the way in sustainability through coffee ground recycling and other innovative waste solutions. Partnering with Recorra, they boost recycling, reduce waste, and champion a circular economy across all 15 cafés.

About the client

The Flour Pot Bakery operates 15 cafés across Brighton, Hove and Worthing and is committed to becoming fully carbon neutral. They chose Recorra as their waste and recycling partner because of our shared focus on sustainability and reducing contamination.

Our Client’s Challenge

The Flour Pot’s sites face several constraints that make waste management complex:

  • Limited or no bin storage
  • Strict council banding and time restricted collection windows
  • Locations on red routes, preventing vehicles from stopping outside

These challenges meant each café needed a flexible, site-specific approach.

Services Provided

Recorra manages all major waste streams for The Flour Pot and also receives real weight data for every collection, giving them visibility of recycling performance, carbon savings and contamination levels across all 15 cafés.

How We Support Their Sustainability Goals

We worked closely with each location to understand their needs and identify opportunities to increase recycling. This included waste audits, staff training, clearer signage, colourcoded bins and guidance on reducing singleuse items. Regular stakeholder meetings and refresher training sessions help maintain progress, and The Flour Pot staff also join us for local beach cleans to support the wider community.

Circular Innovation: Coffee Grounds to Realizzato

A portion of Flour Pot’s used coffee grounds is collected and sent to Murray & Yeatman Distilleries, where they are transformed into Realizzato,a premium spirit created from repurposed coffee waste. This turns a byproduct into a valuable, circulareconomy product.

Achievements

After taking over The Flour Pot Bakery account we have:

  • Seven waste streams established
  • 62% recycling rate achieved
  • Reduced collection frequency and bin sizes across three sites
  • 247 trees saved through improved recycling
  • Continued investment in carbon-neutral initiatives and eco-friendly packaging

The Flour Pot plans to continue joint initiatives with Recorra to increase its recycling rate, including ongoing training with Recorra Consultants.
